Up-and-Coming Boxer, 25, Dies After Ring Tragedy

In the closing seconds of the eighth and final round, Quinones was knocked down, according to a report from the Daily Wire. He was picked up from the ring’s canvas, placed on a stretcher and rushed to North General Clinic in Barranquilla, Colombia. He received surgery there for “neurological deterioration as a result of head trauma,” the report noted.

Luis Quinones, 25, was an undefeated junior welterweight with a 10-0 record, entering Saturday’s match against Venezuelan boxer Jose Munoz. The closely contested match between the two men, described as friends and sparring partners, ended 30 seconds before the scheduled end of the fight.

Doctors also performed a craniectomy after they detected a subdural hematoma, according to an ESPN report.

In the eighth round, Munoz’s mouthguard popped out, so referee Leonel Mercado sent Quinones to a neutral corner while he replaced his mouthguard. Quinones was wobbly on his legs at that point and was knocked out with one punch after the fight continued, according to the report.

Leonardo Quinones announced his brother’s death in a post on Facebook.

“You went ahead of us my loving brother, now you are with your heavenly father, whom you adored and served,” Leonardo Quinones wrote. “I love you my brother Luis Quinones, forever and ever in our hearts.”

The fight’s promoter, Cuadrilatero Boxing, mourned his death in a statement posted to social media.

“Cuadrilatero Boxing is deeply saddened by the death of Luis Quinones, an exceptional and disciplined human being, who always showed the greatest commitment to this sport. Luis was passionate about boxing, so much so that he left his hometown of Barrancabermeja to continue his career in Barranquilla and become a national athlete.”

“His idol was Julio Cesar Chavez.”
