Republican Senator Suffers ‘Serious’ Injury, May Need Amputation

Developing story: The office of Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) announced on Wednesday that the Senator suffered a “serious” injury to his hand.

The injury will require surgery and may result in amputation.

CNN Chief Congressional Correspondent Manu Raju posted Cramer’s statement:

“While working in the year doer the weekend, I sustained a serious injury to my right hand, with required immediate surgery.

I continue to remain in North Dakota close to medical care as there is a high risk of infection and the possible need for amputation.

I am alert and in good spirits. Although I am missing this week of votes and hearings, I am monitoring Senate business closely and [am] in constant contact with my colleagues and staff.

Optimistic and able to inject a little humor into a difficult situation, Cramer concluded his update by saying, “I plan to return to Washington, after the Independence Day state work period and expect to be doling out a lot of left-handed fist bumps.”

Cramer’s communications director, Molly Block, later clarified on Twitter that the risk of amputation relates to the Senator’s fingers, not his whole hand.

“For those curious – the risk of amputation is for his fingers,” Block wrote, then confirmed Cramer’s positive disposition by adding that Senator Cramer “is cracking jokes that his future NFL career is over.”

Correspondent Jeremy Turley tweeted:

“Update on Sen. Cramer’s hand injury: a large rock rolled onto his right hand, ripping off the tip of his pinkie finger and crushing his ring finger. A Bismarck surgeon later stitched part of the pinkie back on.”
