Read It: Elon Musk Tells Twitter Staff To Work ‘Long Hours At High Intensity’ Or Hit The Road
Elon Musk, the new owner and CEO of Twitter, seems to be intent on running a tight ship. Since assuming control of the mammoth social media platform in late October, Elon has fired several key executives (who reportedly did not support Elon’s goal of transitioning the company to more of a free speech platform), released thousands of employees (via email), eliminated the “free lunch” program and work from home option, and last night warned employees to expect to work hard and keep long hours.
According to The Daily Wire, Elon’s “midnight” email warned that employees must be willing to work “extremely hardcore” if they desire to remain with the company.
Musk has stated that the company was management-heavy, had many redundant systems, and inefficient processes. To illustrate his conclusions, last month, Elon posted an email he received from Twitter’s HR department informing him that, as a new employee, he needed to complete a management 101 class.
Elon’s bid to swing the company from Left to Center has been met with fierce criticism from Left-leaning media outlets. His moves to streamline the company have been met with fierce criticism from within the company.
Last week, after the discontinuation of the free lunch program was announced, self-proclaimed “Democrat Activist” Andrew Wortman accused Elon of starving his employees, writing:
Elon “fired ¾ of the employees. Now he’s planning to starve the rest of them. He’s failure incarnate.”
Elon has noted he expects resistance and believes he knows best how to move the company to where he believes it needs to be. Last week he rejected an offer from Twitter’s former CEO to lead the company amid reports of internal strife.
Early Tuesday morning, Elon wrote to his employees:
“Going forward, to build a breakthrough Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore. This will mean working long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.”
In an interview with the Daily Wire, Musk noted several times in his work history that he logged 120 hours/week and considered working 80 hours/week “pretty sustainable.”
In yesterday’s email, Musk stated that employees must note their intent to be on board with the new Twitter” (via a Google Form) by the end of the workday Thursday. Those who fail to do so would be released and “receive three months of severance.”
In his letter, Musk also implied that non-productive employees and “non-technical employees who do not have an immediate impact on running the website” will be let go.
“Twitter will also be much more engineering-driven,” Musk wrote. “Design and product management will still be very important and report to me, but those writing great code will constitute the majority of our team and have the greatest sway. At its heart, Twitter is a software and servers company, so I think this makes sense.”
