Police Investigating ‘Questionable Death’ of 26-Year-Old NFL Linebacker

TMZ reports that Baltimore police are “not ruling out the possibility of an overdose” in the surprising death of 26-year-old Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jaylon Ferguson.

An officer told TMZ: “Ferguson never regained consciousness…[he] was pronounced dead on the scene by medics.”

As of early Wednesday morning, police said they do not suspect foul play, noting there were no signs of trauma.

At 7:18 a.m., police classified the death as “questionable.”

At 9:23 a.m., police investigators said they were “not ruling out the possibility of an overdose.”

The Ravens have not released any details regarding the death, but Fox News reported that a team representative released the following statement:

“We are profoundly saddened by the tragic passing of Jaylon Ferguson. He was a kind, respectful young man with a big smile and an infectious personality. We express our heartfelt condolences to Jaylon’s family and friends as we mourn a life lost much too soon.”

The Ravens team expressed shock and sadness.

Teammates were quick to share their thoughts:

Josh Bynes noted that they “joked together, laughed together, and prayed together.”

Wide receiver Tyland Wallace tweeted, “We are profoundly saddened by the tragic passing of Jaylon Ferguson.”

Pro bowler Pat Ricard wrote: “I can’t believe this. Just absolutely tragic. RIP.”

Ferguson was a third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He played in 38 games over the last three seasons, tallying 4.5 sacks and 67 tackles.

Before being drafted into the NFL, the 6 foot 5 inch, 275-pound athlete was a standout athlete at Louisiana Tech University.

There Ferguson recorded 45 sacks, making him the NCAA career sacks leader. Louisiana Tech University staff expressed their condolences Wednesday morning, tweeting:

“We will remember his God-given talents on the field and his infectious personality off of it,” the university said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
