Husband of Teacher Slain In Texas School Shooting Suffers Fatal Heart Attack

A man died of a heart attack days after his wife of 24 years was gunned down protecting Robb Elementary students.

Irma Garcia taught at the Uvalde, Texas, elementary school for 23 years and been nominated as Teacher of the Year in 2019. Law enforcement who entered the classroom after the siege found her body embracing students, her nephew John Martinez said in a New York Times report.

He had announced her death Tuesday in a Twitter post. “My tia did not make it, she sacrificed herself protecting the kids in her classroom, i beg of you to keep my family including all of her family in y’all’s prayers,” he said in a Twitter post. “IRMA GARCIA IS HER NAME and she died a HERO. she was loved by many and will truly be missed.”

Wednseday, Martinez launched a gofundme campaign to raise money to cover his aunt’s funeral expenses. He said the money raised would be provided to the family in a check. In one day, the campaign has already raised more than one-quarter of a million dollars — easily surpassing the stated $30,000 goal.

“Irma Garcia, the campaign began. “A wife and mother to 4 children. Sweet, kind, loving. Fun with the greatest personality. A wonderful 4th grade teacher at Robb Elementary that was a victim in a Texas school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. She sacrificed herself protecting the kids in her classroom. She was a hero.”

Her husband, Joe Garcia, had attended her memorial Thursday morning to drop off flowers, grief-stricken from losing the love of his life, Martinez reportedly said. Soon after, he reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack.

“Joe Garcia, the husband of Irma Garcia, one of two teachers shot and killed in Uvalde, TX on Tuesday, has reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack,” announced Fox San Antonio midday anchor Ernie Zuniga. “Joe and Irma were high school sweethearts and married 24 years. They leave behind four children.”
