Here’s Who Liz Cheney Spoke With After Her Primary Loss

The congresswoman whose lopsided loss to a Trump-backed opponent that ended her career in Congress spoke with President Joe Biden afterwards.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) spent little of the $15 million she raised for her quixotic attempt to retain the Cowboy State’s lone congressional seat. That does not explain why she lost by a nearly 40-point margin in Wyoming’s August 18 GOP primary. She paid a price for her continued criticism of former President Donald Trump.

“Two years ago, I won this primary with 73 percent of the vote,” Rep. Cheney noted in her concession speech. “I could easily have done the same again.”

After her loss, the former president posted a link on Truth to an analysis from The Federalist saying Cheney would have lost by an even bigger margin were it not for crossover Democratic voters.

While the 45th president did not communicate directly with the loser of Wyoming’s contest, she did hear from another president.

“I did hear from President Biden,” Cheney said. “We had a very, a very good talk. A talk about the importance of putting the country in front of partisanship.”

She revealed the conversation with President Biden to ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl during an interview broadcast Sunday on “This Week.” Cheney added she heard from a number of other Republicans after the loss as well.

Some, like Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), have supported her. Romney called her courageous, noting that her principled stand against former President Donald Trump doomed her chances for reelection but she persisted anyway.

The Wyoming congresswoman first drew Republican ire when she, along with nine others, voted to impeach then-President Trump, blaming him for the Capitol riot.

That vote, along with continuing criticism of Trump, cost her the number three GOP House leadership role she previously held. She was also censured by Wyoming’s Republican Party.
